Young drivers in Ontario are going to have to be extra careful starting Sunday.
That's the day new provincial drinking and driving regulations kick-in, cautions the Ontario Provincial Police
As of Sunday, a full-licensed driver who is age 21 or under or a novice driver found to have any alcohol in their system will receive an immediate 24-hour roadside driver's licence suspension. If convicted of the offence, a fine of $60-500 and a 30-day suspension could result.
As well, novice drivers of all ages in the Graduated Licensing System, as of Sunday, who are caught with any amount of alcohol in their system will receive the same penalties. A conviction, in addition to a fine of $60-500, will also result in a suspension period as per the Novice Driver Escalating Sanction scheme up to and including cancellation of the novice licence and also a return to the start of the Graduated Licensing System.
