Owners must look after their cats

News

Posted 1 month ago

July 21.

It seems a little strange that the cat owners quoted take very little responsibility for controlling their pets. It seems that cats should be allowed to roam as they please and it is up to others on the street to protect themselves from the cat invasion.

They not only fail to keep their own pets under control, but feed and provide shelter for feral cats. Is there not a bylaw that limits how many cats you may keep? Six in the backyard, in addition to what ever number already owned, stretches the imagination.

The argument that "they are not my cats" has no validity. If the cat lives at your house and you feed it, then it is your cat, it just has not been tagged.

The flyer that was sent around did not ask owners to control their cats. Its sole purpose was to demonize the couple who were trying to keep the cats away.

What are the alternatives to trapping? A motion activated sprinkler? That would be appreciated by the mail carrier, meter reader and visitors. How about spraying a noxious scent? That doesn't sound too pleasant. They only absolve the pet owner of responsibility for control.

Why not accept the responsibility for your pet that is implied with ownership. A good harness and a length of rope to keep the cat at home would go a long way to resolving the disputes.

While I agree wholeheartedly with the concept of taking responsibility for one's pets (cats, dogs, rabbits, geckos - whatever), seriously - "...protect themselves from the cat invasion."?? We are not talking blue-green algae or body-snatchers here, we are talking nuisance domestic pets. In the spirit of neighbourly co-operation, less polarization and more respectful and diplomatic communication and action would go a lot further than live traps and flyers!! Come on people, grow up and act like responsible adults who care about each other and about our furry companions!

From a person who has the 'luxury' of dealing with stray cats...seeing them wander around my backyard, using my flower beds as a litter box, not to mention underneath the deck the same way. Imagine sitting as a family in the livingroom, eating popcorn, watching a movie, and all you smell coming into the window with the beautiful breeze is the smell of cat urine. Yum.
You can literally see a trail going underneath my hedges, through the backyard behind my children's swing set. If someone if feeding stray cats, they should treat them as their pet & contain them to their yard, ensuing all responsibility for them. If that cannot be done, bring them to an animal shelter, or have them picked up. Otherwise they become a nuisance to other neighbors who are forced to take action themselves. If that has to be a trap to get these cats, then so be it. It does not hurt them. If they can survive in the wild, they can survive a few minutes in a trap until a shelter picks them up. There they have a chance of having a real home.

A live trap beats a conibear. If you are a pet lover then love your pet. Your neighbours will respect you. My neighbour is upset because his cat disappeared; and this fool has had bears in his back yard twice this year.

stars 24 - "a chance of having a real home". Seriously? Feral cats are always euthanized at shelters. But then so are friendly adoptable cats and kittens. There is simply not enough room. It would take an army to trap and remove (kill) the cats and you would never get ahead of the breeding. Trap neuter return works because nature abhors a vacuum.

I'm not sure if I believe your vacuum theory but we have pretty cold winters it's not like in Toronto. What we need is to make it illegal to breed animals unless you are licensed. Maybe if we can create some good tax grab scenario the government/city will make it happen.

"Removing animals from an area creates a vacuum. Catching and killing feral cats is animal control’s traditional approach for feral cats. Catch and kill attempts may temporarily reduce the number of feral cats in a given area, but two things happen: intact(unsterilized)survivors continue to breed, and other cats move in to the now-available territory. This is a phenomenon known as the vacuum effect, and it is documented worldwide.

Catch and kill doesn’t work, yet it continues. Animal control agencies have been catching and killing cats for decades in a misguided attempt to reduce the number of feral cats in a given area. Animal control continues to practice catch and kill even though the number of outdoor cats does not decrease, proving the futility of these practices. This endless, cruel cycle is not supported by the public and is a gross misuse of tax dollars. The vacuum effect is just one reason catch and kill is so ineffective."

This is an age old problem.I think there should be a law that you have your animal spade or neutured and you have to prove that you did it,otherwise no cat...CATS are worse as they run allover and spray. That is my solution and the City should set the bylaw.Done and its over,I have a cat but she is well neurtured. If you love your animal you will do it. Vets charge too much anyway,Should have a sale day,2 for 1.
