Two established Sudburyarea companies marked important milestones on Thursday.
In Serpent River First Nation, Chief Isadore Day and the Mansour Group of Sudbury announced a partnership they hope will lead to new business opportunities in Northern Ontario.
"Our partnership -- based on respect, trust and mutual benefit -- will result in the creation of new jobs and wealth for Serpent River First Nation," Day said in a release.
"We are very excited to get to work immediately with the Mansour Group to jointly develop new and exciting business opportunities."
Serpent River First Nation is located midway between Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury along the North Channel of Lake Huron.
On its website, The Mansour Group of Companies describes itself as a unique network of companies that can provide one stop shopping for not only all of your mining needs, but as well as your transportation, scrap metal, diesel engine sales and service, and warehousing requirements.
The group of eight companies include Mansour Mining, BM Metals, Consolidated Drilling and Blasting, Shattercone Metallurgical Inc. and Sudbury Lime.
"We are excited about this partnership with Serpent River First Nation and Chief Day," said Milad Mansour, Mansour group president. "The Mansour Group of Companies welcomes the culturally rich and progressive Serpent River First Nation.
"We look forward to leveraging our strengths in developing the business potential in Northern Ontario with our First Nations partners," said Mansour.
Manitoulin Transport, meanwhile, announced that it is marking its 50th year in business. Founded in 1960 by Doug Smith, now chair, The Manitoulin Group of Companies, Manitoulin Transport is a privately held, family-owned company that has experienced considerable growth since its inception in Gore Bay, Manitoulin Island, 50 years ago.
"This year we're celebrating a true Canadian success story," Manitoulin Transport president Gord Smith said in a statement. "A story created from the ground up, driven by customer commitment and achieved through the dedication of our people."
Manitoulin Transport had only a couple of vehicles when it started out, initially carrying freight to various points on Manitoulin Island. It quickly set about growing the business and earning market share by providing what it said was a level of service and a suite of offerings that would set the standard in the industry.
Over the years, Manitoulin Transport has evolved to keep pace with a changing global marketplace, meet customers' current and anticipated needs and consistently provide superior value. A number of strategic acquisitions have spurred its growth and its ability to partner with customers to extend their businesses across Canada, the United States and around the world.
"This is a time for reflection on where we've been and where we plan to go," Smith said. "We're always looking for ways to do better and do more, and that's something we hope to do for another 50 years."
