Greater Sudbury's Greek community has already begun another year of festivities.
The Greek Festival kicked off yesterday at 4 p.m. at the Hellenic Centre on Ester Road.
"We welcome everybody to experience the warmth of the Greek hospitality," said organizer George Malis.
Malis did not know how to begin describing everything the festival offers, he said. There is specialty Greek food, including pastries and Greek traditional dancing by the youth group. There is also a live bouzouki band from Toronto. The patio is open rain or shine. Celebrations begin at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, running into the evening.
The foremost objective of the festival is to engage the community in the rich Greek culture, said Malis.
He said he hopes to maintain the festival's quality from previous years.
"It's the 18th, so we just want to repeat the success," said Malis.
Organizers expect up to 4,000 people, based on previous years.
Funds raised go to sustaining the Greek Orthodox church, but the Greek community will also reach out to the community, said Malis.
Last year, it donated money for a bed at Sudbury Regional Hospital and this year, it raised money for relief in Haiti.
