CATHOLIC CHARITY GIVES
Three hospitals in Northeastern Ontario will each receive $500,000 courtesy of the Bishop Alexander Carter Foundation.
Sudbury Regional Hospital in Sudbury, Sault Area Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie and North Bay General Hospital in North will all receive money from the foundation established in honour of the former bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie.
A total of $100,000 was also distributed to 22 organizations, including soup kitchens, palliative care organizations, youth programs and counselling services in the diocese.
"These funds will support the efforts of people who feed the poor, care for the sick and counsel those in need," said Bishop Jean-Louis Plouffe, chair of the foundation.
The foundation also donated $50,000 to Cath-Com Productions, which broadcasts a weekly mass for shut-ins, and $25,000 to the Anishinabe Spiritual Centre in Espanola.
Student bursaries totalling $18,000 were awarded to Catholic high schools.
The foundation's board of directors held its annual meeting this week, at which it announced the funding allocations.
Board members include Judge George Valin of North Bay, Gerry McGuire of Sault Ste. Marie, Louise Paquette of Sudbury and Plouffe.

About a dozen workers claim they have not been treated fairly byXstrata in being recalled to work.

GOLF FOR PARKINSONS
Peter Higham, president of the Sudbury chapter of the Parkinson Society, will team up with Jim Allsop from Grill Marks Bistro Golf & Conference Centre on Tuesday at noon for a warm-up golf game to launch a new partnership and upcoming charity golf tournament.
A men's open golf tournament will be held Aug. 28 and 29 at Grill Marks Bistro Golf & Conference Centre on Highway 69 North in Val Caron.
The prize package of $60,000 is one of the largest in Northern Ontario. Pledges and proceeds from the silent auction will go to the local chapter and the Parkinson Society Central and Northern Ontario.
