CATHOLIC CHARITY GIVES

Three hospitals in Northeastern Ontario will each receive $500,000 courtesy of the Bishop Alexander Carter Foundation.

Sudbury Regional Hospital in Sudbury, Sault Area Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie and North Bay General Hospital in North will all receive money from the foundation established in honour of the former bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie.

A total of $100,000 was also distributed to 22 organizations, including soup kitchens, palliative care organizations, youth programs and counselling services in the diocese.

"These funds will support the efforts of people who feed the poor, care for the sick and counsel those in need," said Bishop Jean-Louis Plouffe, chair of the foundation.

The foundation also donated $50,000 to Cath-Com Productions, which broadcasts a weekly mass for shut-ins, and $25,000 to the Anishinabe Spiritual Centre in Espanola.

Student bursaries totalling $18,000 were awarded to Catholic high schools.

The foundation's board of directors held its annual meeting this week, at which it announced the funding allocations.

Board members include Judge George Valin of North Bay, Gerry McGuire of Sault Ste. Marie, Louise Paquette of Sudbury and Plouffe.

I never got the chance to have
